National Day of Prayer

The 66th annual observance of National Day of Prayer is Thursday, and there are at least two events scheduled here in Liberty County to commemorate the day. Both are noon time events – one in Liberty and the other in Cleveland. Back in 1775, the First Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer. Then, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln also called for such an event. The official National Day of Prayer was enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Harry Truman back in 1952. Then, in 1988, President Ronald Regan signed a law designating the first Thursday in May as the official date for that national observance. That makes this year’s National Day of Prayer this Thursday. The 2017 national theme is “For Your Great Name's Sake! Hear Us ...Forgive Us ...Heal Us!” That theme is based on scripture from Daniel 9:19. Again, there are at least two events here in LibertyCounty this Thursday. One is on the north end of the county. It’s at noonThursday at the historic old City Hall on East Boothe Street in Cleveland. The other local National Day of Prayer event is on the south end of the county. It’s also Thursday at noonand will be held on the south side steps of the Liberty County Courthouse in Liberty. For more details on the Liberty event, call Tony Hines at 936-298-2821. For information on the National Day of Prayer gathering in Cleveland, call James Holt at 281-593-8798.
