Logan Picket on Sanctuary Cities

The Texas House this week passed a bill that would ban so-called “sanctuary cities” in the Lone Star State. The phrase has no legal meaning, but has come to refer to cities or some cases, counties that allegedly do not follow current federal guidelines regarding deportation of undocumented immigrants. The Texas legislation – if approved by the state senate and then signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, would not punish illegal immigrants but would instead seek to impose criminal charges on municipal police chiefs and elected county sheriffs who do not turn over illegal immigrants in their custody to federal immigration authorities. Liberty County District Attorney Logan Pickett said there are no entities in this area that he knows of which qualify as sanctuary cities. To date, those municipal entities identified as “sanctuary cities” by some source or another are all big cities with large populations.
