We reported to you last basketball season about an outstanding young man at the University of Houston with strong local ties but who actually calls Atascocita home. Fabian White Jr. is the grandson of Mayor John and Sarah White of Ames. He is scholarship at U of H and as a Junior that young man has become quite the basketball star for the Cougars.  Just last week U of H won the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic basketball tournament in Honolulu. Leading the University of Houston Men’s Basketball team in that tournament is Fabian White Jr. named Most Outstanding Player for the tournament  and now Fabian was honored Monday as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.  In Hawaii, White led the Cougars to a semifinal win over Georgia Tech and a championship game victory over Nationally ranked Washington. For Houston it was their fourth straight win and they were victorious for the 8th time in the last 9 contests.   Fabian White’s dad is a Liberty native and lives now in Atascosita. Fabian Junior  who is an Atascocita native averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while hitting 52.4 percent from the field, and went eight for eight on free throw attempts.  White posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds against Georgia Tech. He followed that with a career-high 19 points and two rebounds in the championship game against the Washington Huskies.  For his impressive efforts,  As we said Fabian was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and player of the week in the American Athletic Conference player of the week.  Wow, It was the first such honor in his career.
