SO Employee of the Month

The call to Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Chance Maddox and his trainee partner, Deputy Vicki Gardiner, from the Sheriff’s dispatcher was what most law enforcement personnel consider to be a rather routine well fair check. But on Sunday, September 22nd a call seemed somewhat “routine” turned out to be anything but routine. It also led to the selection of Deputy Chance Maddox as the Sheriff’s Office Employee of the Month for the manner in which the potentially deadly situation was handled by Maddox. Following the initial call for a well fair check came the information the subject of the call had emotional issues but information from the family who was calling the dispatcher also assured the deputies the man had no guns or other weapons but was only being difficult to handle. After talking to some relatives the deputies approached the mobile home. As deputies approached the front door they saw a man standing inside near the large plate glass window holding an AR15 rifle and obviously trying work the mechanism while a relative stood in the doorway.  According to Maddox each deputy was well aware the thin walls of the mobile home and their hand guns would be no match for the AR15 rifle if this situation got out of control.  A relative went inside the home and tried to talk the man into dropping the AR15. Unfortunately with the mental state the man was in, it was the deputies who were his enemy and he was going to defend himself at any cost. The relative managed to grab the barrel of the rifle while Maddox rushed in and neutralized the situation by the use of his less than lethal tazer. The individual, who had been diagnosed with PTSD but off his medication for some time was secured and sent to a hospital for evaluation. His parting comment was “ This was your lucky day because I have never had a gun jam on me before.”  It is with pride and appreciation for a job very well done that Sheriff Bobby Rader and his entire agency ask the public to salute Deputy Chance Maddox for being selected the Employee of the Month for October, 2019.
