Free Fishing Day this Saturday

We are told that Texas is one of the best places in the nation for fishing, and this Saturday you can wet a line anywhere in the state free. As part of National Fishing Day and Boating Week, this Saturday residents and visitors alike will be able to fish or crab anywhere in Texas without a fishing license. For adults to fish in Texas on every other day of the year except for this Saturday, Texans and non-residents of the state do need a license. Game Warden Noxson said resident and non-resident youth under the age of 17 do not need a fishing license at any time of the year. However, if a youth wants to retain a red drum fish over the maximum length, they do need to purchase an Exempt Angler Tag for $3. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issues more than 2.4 million hunting and fishing licenses yearly through the agency's 28 field offices plus more than 50 state parks and some 1,700 retailers across the state. Those licenses are also available at the Liberty County Tax Office at the courthouse in Liberty. Hunting and fishing licenses may also be purchased online 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the state wildlife department’s website at Another option is toll-free by phone at 1-800-895-4248. Call center hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For online and phone orders, officials say a physical license will be mailed within three business days. Once more, this Saturday is free fishing day in Texas. That means anyone can fish or crab anywhere in the state without a license. Texas Game Warden Jake Noxson reminds those taking advantage of Saturday’s statewide free fishing day that all state regulations still apply. In a related note, hunters and anglers can take the Outdoor Annual that contains those regulations into the field via a free app available on iPhone and Android devices.
