Liberty County Hurricane Preparedness Workshop next Tuesday

The2019 Liberty County Hurricane Preparedness Workshop is next Tuesday, May 7, at 6 p.m. in the Jack Hartel Community Center in Liberty. According to Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Crista Beasley-Adams, the workshop will feature experts addressing important issues regarding the upcoming hurricane season, which begins June 1 and goes through November 30. Mrs. Beasley-Adams said, among the speakers, are officials from the National Weather Service and the Texas Department of Public Safety. They will also have lots of free pamphlets, booklets and other very important information. We’ve reported forecasters are predicting a slightly below average probability of a major hurricane making landfall in the United States this year. Researchers at Colorado State University recently released their annual forecast for the 2019 hurricane season. According to their predictions for 2019, there will be 13 named tropical storms with seven reaching hurricane force. The good folks at Colorado State forecast that two of those storms will reach major status with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour. So, what about predictions for our area? These same experts predict the Gulf Coast - from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville in Texas – has a 28 percent chance of being struck by a major hurricane. The 50-year average is 30 percent. Once more, the 2019 Liberty County Hurricane Preparedness Workshop is this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Jack Hartel Community Center, 318 San Jacinto Street in Liberty.
