Sheriff's office investigates shooting

Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputies are investing a shooting incident in the Hardin area Wednesday night. Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said 22-year old James Nelms got into an argument with Jerry L. Griffin, 78 at Griffin’s residence on CR #2352 around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. The argument was apparently over Nelms sleeping arrangements at Griffin’s residence. Jerry Griffin told investigators he began to feel threatened and, wanting to scare Nelms away, pulled a 32.caliber hand gun, allegedly firing three times into the floor. One of those shots is said to have accidently hit James Nelms in the lower leg. Nelms was treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital then released later Wednesday night. Liberty County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, which Captain DeFoor described as vague. So far no charges have been filed.
