Local cemeteries to get historic designations

There will be two historical marker dedication ceremonies a week from Saturday, April 13. The Liberty County Historical Commission will host an official marker dedication at 10 a.m. that Saturday honoring the Linney-Acie Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center at Dayton’s First Baptist Church.  Then the commission will hold another marker dedication on Saturday, April 13, at 2:30 p.m. at Abshier Cemetery on County Road 112 near Hankamer. Liberty County Historical Chair Linda Jamison said cemeteries are important keys to Texas’ past. She said these cemeteries are reminders of settlement patterns and reveal information about historic events, religion, lifestyles and genealogy.  The Historical Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. Ms. Jamison encourages the public to attend these two historical marker dedication ceremonies and help celebrate the history of Liberty County. Once more, the first of two historical marker dedication is Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at the Linney-Acie Cemetery at the corner of Linney and Colbert streets in Dayton. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church of Dayton.  Then the commission will hold another marker dedication that same day - Saturday, April 13. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Abshier Cemetery on County Road 112 near Hankamer. We will have more on these April 13 ceremonies along with some history of each of the cemeteries in coming newscasts.
