93rd Annual Men's Brotherhood Banquet set for Feb. 21

Mark your calendars – the 93rd Annual Men’s Brotherhood Banquet at First United Methodist Church of Liberty is set for Thursday, February 21. This year’s keynote speaker is Don Piper, known to many as “The Minister of Hope”. He is author of the best-selling book “90 Minutes in Heaven”. More than 5 million copies of the book in 40 different languages have been sold around the world. Following his radio and television broadcasting career, Don Piper pursued a calling to become an ordained Christian minister. Back in 1989 while serving as a pastor, he was killed in an automobile crash. Another pastor who was on the highway behind him prayed over Don's dead body for 90 minutes. Others who were told of the accident, but not of Don's death, also prayed. After an hour and a half, as the other pastor prayed over Don's lifeless body, Don Piper began to sing a song. Don’s book recounts his return from the gates of Heaven to endure 13 months of hospitalization, 34 major surgeries as well as years of therapy and rehabilitation. He now shares his lessons of answered prayer, miracles, overcoming tragedy, pain and loss, plus the reality of Heaven. Don Piper lives in nearby Pasadena with his wife, Eva. They are the parents of three children. The local men’s Brotherhood Banquet was first held in 1927 and has continued - without interruption – since then. The national Brotherhood Week did not begin until several years after the first men’s event here in Liberty. That makes this storied Liberty gathering the oldest continuously held event of its kind in America. The banquet is recognized for that distinction on a state historical marker in front of the church on Main Street in Liberty. Once more, men of all faiths are invited to the 93rd Annual Men’s Brotherhood Banquet Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church of Liberty. Tickets for the traditional turkey and dressing banquet are $10 and available from any member of the Methodist Men’s Bible Class and from the church office. For more information or tickets, call 936-336-6401.
