Claunch out as Liberty police chief

The Liberty City Council met in executive session for about 30 minutes Thursday before returning to open session and approving a separation agreement with Police Chief Thomas Claunch. We reported that Liberty’s Police Chief of three years had been placed on indefinite paid administrative leave several weeks ago pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations of an unknown type. At the meeting Thursday, Liberty City Attorney Brandon Davis said the city had hired an outside law firm to investigate Thomas Claunch. He would not say why. When asked what kind of allegations were made against Thomas Claunch, Mr. Davis would not say nor would he confirm if the investigation found Thomas Claunch had committed any wrongdoing. He did say, there were no accusations of any sort of criminal behavior. When asked, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett said council’s action was a personnel matter and he could not comment on the complaints made against Thomas Claunch. Again, after weeks of being on paid administrative leave, Liberty City Council approved a separation agreement with Police Chief Thomas Claunch who is retiring.  We reported that appeared to be the case last week when Mr. Claunch notified the Liberty Rotary Club he was resigning his membership there due to his retirement as Liberty Police Chief. No reason beyond “he was not a good fit” was given for Claunch’s decision to retire. Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett said for the time being Gary Martin would continue as Interim Police Chief.
