Birders to hold Big Sit this Saturday

Calling all birders - the Lower Trinity Valley Bird Club will participate in what’s called “The Big Sit” this Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. During the event, participants will record all the birds that can be seen or heard from the observation tower on the JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace in Chambers County. Please note, in previous years they met at Champion Lake. However, since that popular spot is still closed to the public for road repairs, this year’s Big Sit will be at JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace.  The Big Sit is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event hosted by a publication called Bird Watcher’s Digestand founded by the New Haven Bird Club in Connecticut. According to the Bird Watcher’s Digest website, every year bird watchers from around the globe unite on a designated day to participate in this free event. The object is to tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard within a 24-hour period from a 17-foot circle. Some people have called it a tailgate party for birders. That’s The Big Sit this Saturday starting at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through 7 p.m. It all takes place at the observation tower at the JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace, located south of I-10 just west of the Trinity River. There will be signs directing people to the location. Guests are welcome, and participants can sign up for a two-hour spot or stay for as long as the want, even all day. For information, call Lower Trinity Valley Bird Club President Gary Holmes at 713-366-1722.
