Dayton gets interim police chief

Dayton City Council met Monday and swore in an Interim Police Chief. We reported the city had contracted with the Texas First Group Municipal Search Firm for someone to fill in following the retirement of longtime Dayton Police Chief John Headrick. Texas First has brought in Charles Wedemeyer to serve as Dayton’s Chief of Police while the city looks for a new permanent chief. Mr. Wedemeyer has had a long career in law enforcement. He served for 30 years with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department before taking the reins as Chief of Police for Jersey Village. He retired from that position after 14 years and has been serving as an interim police chief since then. That includes stints as interim police chief for the cities of Magnolia, Giddings and most recently, Splendora. Dayton’s Interim Police Chief currently resides in the city of Tomball. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said Charles Wedemeyer brings a wealth of wisdom and experience to Dayton. Mr. Melancon said the Dayton City Council hopes to have a new permanent Police Chief hired by the end of the year.
