Texas Football magazine on Bobcat's district

KSHNhas been reporting on Dave Campbell’s 2018 Texas Football magazine prognostications for teams in Liberty and Chambers counties. Here’s our look at this year’s assessments by that publication of the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats. A reminder - this is first year of UIL realignments for the 2018 through 2020 school years. This alignment places the Bobcats in District 12-2A, Division 1 with five new opponents. That six-team district includes Hull-Daisetta, Deweyville, Groveton, San Augustine, Shelbyville and Pineland West Sabine. The popular statewide gridiron publication slots the San Augustine Wolves as the sixth best team in the Class 2A Pre-Season Top 20 for Division 1. By rule, four teams from each 2A district advance to the playoffs. If the sports writers at Texas Football are correct with their picks, as they often are, San Augustine will win the District 12-2A title. The magazine projects the Groveton Indians to finish in second place followed by the Shelbyville Dragons and Deweyville Pirates. That would mean the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats and Pineland West Sabine Tigers would miss out on the playoffs. As for charges of fifth-year Hull-Daisetta Head Coach and Athletic Director Stan Hodges, the Bobcats are returning eight offensive and seven defensive starters from a team that went 4-6 last season, but advanced to the playoffs with a 3-2 record in district pay. The publication’s writers say Hull-Daisetta players to watch on offense are running backs Shawn Taylor, Gavin Villanueva, Clinton McGee and Blaze Drake along with wide receiver Hayden Whiddon and tight-end Morgan Price. Also highlighted are offensive linemen Kyle Fregia, Jose Gomez, and Deon Reed. Two-way player Kole Frauenberger was featured at both running back and defensive back. On the defensive side of the ball, the sports writers singled out linemen Bryce Aguirre and Jason Shane. According to Texas Football, Gavin Villanueva ran for 756 yards and seven touchdowns last season while Clinton McGee added another 540 yardos and four TDs. The pair is expected to provide a 1-2 punch in the offensive backfield this year. On the other side of the ball, Kole Frauenberger had 62 tackles last season and returns to lead the defense in 2018. Again, the sports writers at Texas Football magazine expect the state-ranked San Augustine Wolves to win the District 12-2A title this season while the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats are projected to jut miss out on post-season action as the fifth place team in their sixth team district.  A reminder - we’ll once again carry all of the Hardin, Hull-Daisetta and Barbers Hill football games with live coverage online at kshn.com. For the 42nd season in a row, all Dayton Broncos and Liberty Panthers games will be heard on KSHN FM 99.9 with several seasons now also online.
