Speed limit changed on SH 146 N inside Liberty city limits

Liberty City Council met Tuesday and passed an ordinance approving a lower speed limit on what has been described as the unsafe curve on Hwy 146 North. We have reported the Liberty Council had been pressing the Texas Department of Transportation for over a year about lowering the speed limit on Hwy 146 where it curves in front of the North Main Baptist Church and the entrance road to the Feather Stone Subdivision, just south of the church. Tuesday night, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett presented council with a letter from Txdot Director of Transportation Operations Ted Clay approving lower speed limits from the North City Limits on Hwy 146 south to the Hwy 146 Bypass.  Liberty City Council added their stamp of approval to the new speed limits which lowers the current 60 mph limit from the north city limits south to Mizell Road down to 50 mph. From Mizell Road south to the 146 Bypass the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 mph. No time frame was given on changing the current signage on that portion of Hwy 146. TxDot will be responsible for that in the near future. We have reported numerous crashes in that area of State Hwy 146, one of the most recent involved a Rye woman who was hospitalized after striking an 18 wheel tractor trailer rig.  Liberty Council member Dennis Beasley has been very vocal about the need for TxDot to take action on the unsafe stretch of Hwy 146 North. At Tuesday’s meeting, Mr. Beasley publically thanked Liberty’s State Senator Robert Nichols and State Representative Ernest Bailes for their help in making the lower speed limit at the Hwy 146 curve happen. Again, TxDot and the Liberty City Council gave their approval to lowering the speed on State Highway 146 North. The new speed limit from the Liberty City Limits to Mizell Road goes to 50 mph and from Mizell Road south to the bypass drops to 45 mph. The speed limit on the 146 Bypass to U. S. 90 remains at the current 60 mph.
