Blood supplies critically low, three local drives this month

Now is great time to give the gift of life. According to information from LifeShrare Blood Center, the local blood supply has reached a critically low level with only enough supplies to last two days. With that in mind, anyone who is able to donate blood is asked to give the gift of life at one of the three local blood drives scheduled now through the end of July. The first blood drive is this Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at First Liberty National Bank’s FLNB Corner on Sam Houston at Travis Street in Liberty. Next, Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center on Travis Street in Liberty has a blood drive scheduled for the following Thursday, July 19, from noon to 4 p.m. The currently scheduled July blood drives wrap up on Monday, July 23. On that day from 2 to 6 p.m., the blood coach will be at Wal-Mart on the Highway 146 bypass in Liberty. The experts at LifeShare Blood Center say someone needs blood every two seconds. With all the advances in modern medicine, there is still no manufactured substitute for human blood. It must be provided by blood donors in the community. The entire donation process takes less than 60 minutes. That includes an interview beforehand to determine a donor’s eligibility by asking questions about your health, travel and the medications you are taking. Then LifeShare professionals will take your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and a small, finger-tip blood sample to check iron levels for the donor’s safety. Once qualified, the actual donation takes 10 to 15 minutes. For your safety, they ask you to sit for about 15 minutes following any blood donation while snacking on free refreshments and sipping on a beverage. Once more, you can give the gift of life at any of the upcoming local blood drives. The first is this Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at First Liberty National Bank’s FLNB Corner on Sam Houston 9
