Popular Champion Lake closing for road repair

The popular Champion Lake Public Use Area will be closed starting Tuesday for an extended period of up to several months. According to Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus, the refuge is temporarily closing the federal road portion of County Road 417 that leads into the Champion Lake Public Use Area. Flooding during Hurricane Harvey damaged a 40 foot concrete culvert located at the junction of where that county road and the federal road meet. Mr. Marcus said that damage has gotten progressively worse since September 2017 and has become a safety concern. There are currently cones and markers delineating the affected area. A new culvert design is in the process of being approved. Stuart Marcus said emergency funding has been allocated, but refuge staff is estimating it may take several months until the bidding and building process is complete. Again, all access to the Champion Lake Public Use Area will be closed to all entry starting Tuesday. The Champion Lake Public Use Area is located at the end of County Road 417 off of FM 1409, ten miles South of U.S. 90 in Dayton.  For more information, call the Trinity River Refuge office at 936-336-9786.
