Sales tax revenue up for 9 of 10 cities in Liberty County

Sales tax dollars have increased for nine of the 10 incorporated cities in Liberty County for the first half of 2018 as compared to the same six months last year. When all cities are combined, sales tax revenue is up 4.95 percent countywide. That’s a real dollar total increase of $215,446 for these 10 incorporated cities countywide that receive sales tax income. Those revenues are used by cities in their general operating budgets. Now let’s take a look at specific towns here in Liberty County. Payments from sales tax collections to the city of Liberty are up by 1.16 percent for the first two quarters of this year. In real dollars, that’s an increase of $17,055 for a total local take of $1.478 million for city of Liberty coffers. Turning to the city of Dayton, sales tax income there rose 3.62 percent for January through June. In real dollars, Dayton’s share is $1.164 million – that’s up $40,875 so far in 2018. Moving north to the city of Cleveland - that town’s share of sales tax revenue jumped 6.81 percent or $109,071 for a six-month total of $1.71 million. That is the largest year-to-date total for any city countywide. Other local towns with a rise in sales tax revenue are Ames, up 16.79 percent, and Daisetta with a whopping increase of 70.35 percent this year. Also posting big increases are Devers with a 61.88 percent tick upward and Plum Grove with a jump of 91.84 percent. Sales tax revenue for 2018 is up 9.41 percent in Kenefick and 15.22 percent in the city of North Cleveland. The only town in Liberty County with a decrease in sales tax revenue is Hardin, down 2.06 percent. Turning south to Chambers County, the cities of Mont Belvieu, Anahuac, Cove and Old-River Winfree have all recorded a drop in sales tax revenue so far this year. Once more, nine of the 10 incorporated towns in Liberty County with retail businesses posted an increase in sales tax revenue for the first half of 2018. For that six-month period, local share of sales tax payments to all 10 cities totals $4,562,681.
