FM 1960 Christmas Crash: A Christmas evening accident on FM 1960 at CR 608 left 2 victims with minor injuries. According to Sgt. Seivert with the Dayton Police Department, it was just before 5:30 PM Christmas Day when a passenger car, heading west on 1960, slowed for a left turn onto CR 608. That’s when an eastbound SUV collided with the other car. Sgt. Seivert said only minor injuries were sustained in the crash. One person from each of the vehicles was transported to Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center.

Men’s Health Fair: To the men in our audience - mark your calendar. The Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center is again hosting the long running men’s prostate screening clinic and men’s health fair. It’s all free and set for Saturday, January 18, from 8 a.m. till noon at the Liberty and Dayton hospital. This event was started, we believe, in 1999 and held every year since, except one. The hospital and KSHN have jointly always been sponsors. The free men’s health fair includes both the D.R.E, or Digital Rectal Exam, and the blood test, or Prostate Specific Antigen. The prostate exam will be coupled with several other blood tests also important to men’s health. On the morning of January 18th, to get the most accurate results, please do not have anything to eat or drink before the clinic. After the tests are complete they will have snacks for one and all.

Bus Trip: The next Coushatta Bus Trip sponsored regularly, for several years, by the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is set for Thursday, January16th. Chamber President Mary Anne Campbell said, in order to meet the necessary deadlines with the casino, reservations for this luxury bus trip need to be confirmed right away. The First Class Tours luxury bus line will leave, for the Coushatta Casino Reservation in Kinder Louisiana, from the old Thrif-Tee Food Center parking lot in the North Main Shopping Center in Liberty. Departure is at 8 a.m. Jan. 16th, returning that same day from Kinder around 7:30 p.m. Those making the trip do not need to be a Chamber member. The round trip price is $15 - water and snacks provided. Those who have gone in the past say it’s a fun day. Door prizes, donated by local merchants, are also given away. If you have a favorite western, comedy or family oriented movie, bring it along to be shown. Of note, First Class Tours bus policies do not permit smoking or alcoholic beverages on the trip. For reservations, call Eliza Mae Guidry at 258-5345 or 402-0340.

Mental Health: We have reported about the Liberty County Attorney’s Office taking a pro-active role when it comes to identifying individuals with mental health issues that find themselves in the criminal justice system. Liz Polasek mental health investigator for the County Attorney’s office, a recent guest on kshn.com’s Partyline program, said often when a family member with a mental health issue acts out the first reaction for family is often to call 911. Investigator Polasek said seeking help for that family member, with a mental health issue, might not be the best answer for that individual. Ms. Polasek said calling a crisis hotline or local mental health facility to get that person help may not treat the real cause. For information about mental health issues please call the County Attorney’s Office call 936-336-4650.
