Amtrak v Truck: A Cemex cement truck was struck by an eastbound Amtrak passenger train yesterday afternoon just after 1 p.m. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erik Burse said 2 were taken by ambulance to Houston area hospitals, the driver of the truck, and a passenger on the train. Sgt. Burse said the truck driver was transported with minor injuries and the train passenger was taken due to a pre-existing medical condition not related to the accident. There were 78 passengers and 12 crew members on the train. The investigation is ongoing.
New Children’s Librarian: The Liberty City Council at their regular meeting last Tuesday approved the hiring of a full time children’s librarian. The new children’s librarian is a familiar face to library patrons. Katie Edgell has been with the library for about a year and recently received her Masters Degree in Library Science from Texas Women’s University. Dana Abshier, Director of the Liberty Municipal Library said Katie has a reassuring way of dealing with children that they respond to well. She said, since Ms Edgell has been with the Liberty Library the children’s story time reading program has grown. The City Library is open Monday-Thursday from 10 - 6, Friday from 1-5 pm, and Saturday from 10am-4pm.
Fire Death Electrical: Liberty County Fire Marshal Bill Hergemueller has ruled the fire that claimed two lives last week to be accidental, an electrical fire, possibly involving a space heater. reported 57 year old Dorothy Louise Ener and her mother, Dorothy Bracewell Nugent, thought to be 85, perished in the fire. A granddaughter, 37-year Kimberly Rogers had severe injuries and went by ambulance to a Houston hospital.
Avoid Scammers: The city of Dayton has released some tips on how to avoid being scammed over the phone. Ask for the caller’s name and who they represent. Also get their phone number. Then hang up. Then call your utility provider using the number found on your latest bill. Give them a full report of what was said and if they gave it, give your utility company the caller’s name, and what utility service they claim to represent. Also give the caller’s phone number. If they won’t provide answers they’re crooks. Tell your utility provider all of that.
Dayton Soccer: The Dayton Bronco soccer team held off Montgomery High School for a 1-0 victory in a hard fought game. Dayton Boys Soccer Coach Jed Garner said Alfredo Mendoza scored the game winner, and only goal, taking a nice pass from Jaime Pineda. Also Juan Plascencia and Kevin Robledo combined hard work as goalie’s for the shut out win. Dayton’s JV also got their first win with a 3-2 victory over Montgomery JV.
