Hardin Post Office Dedication: Chief Warrant Officer - 2 Lucas Lowe was killed in December of 2016 when the helicopter he was piloting crashed on a training mission in the Gulf of Mexico near Anahuac. Yesterday, a big crowd gathered at the Hardin Post Office for a renaming ceremony. District 36 US Congressman Dr. Brian Babin said Lucas Lowe was as irreplaceable to Southeast Texas as the post office in Hardin. Congressman Babin said Lucas Lowe’s legacy will live on with The Lucas Lowe Memorial Post Office. Some 150 family, friends and community members were on hand yesterday as the Hardin Post Office was renamed the Lucas Lowe Memorial Post Office.

Jail Inmate Death: A Dayton man who was a jail inmate in the Liberty Co. Jail that we had reported died last Thursday while in custody has been identified. An autopsy revealed cause of death of Joseph Daniel Edwards was a heart attack. The 58-year old male inmate was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell by Correctional Officers during a routine bed check. According to Captain Ken Defoor, Public Information Officer for the Liberty County Sheriff, a Liberty ambulance transported the man to the Liberty Dayton Regional Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency room staff there, Mr. Edwards was pronounced dead. The Jefferson County Medical Examiners office ruled his death was due to a heart attack.

Chachere TCEA Finalist: A well known local educator has been named a finalist by the Texas Computer Education Association for the honor of Prestigious Technology Administrator of the Year Award. Suzanne Chachere, who is Executive Director of Technology for Dayton ISD, is one of three finalists for that statewide honor. The Texas Computer Education Association was founded in 1980 and is a global nonprofit, member-based organization that supports the use of technology in education. DISD Superintendent Dr. Jessica Johnson said Mrs. Chachere is very deserving of this honor. The TCEA Educator Awards ceremony will be held at the Hilton Austin Hotel in February.

River Bottom Wreck: Sunday afternoon a vehicle crash in the river bottom on US 90, between Liberty and Dayton, caused a traffic jam. It was about 2:30 PM and occurred in the westbound lane, when a vehicle driven by Ruby Campbell reportedly struck an SUV in the rear. The SUV, driven by William Cranford then changed lanes striking a third car driven by James Dugat. His passenger car was struck, also in the rear end. According to Liberty Police Lt. Chip Fairchild, there were no injuries in the three vehicle crash Sunday. The accident was investigated by the Liberty Police Department. There was no indication in the report of who was found to be at fault nor what, if any, citations were issued in that crash report.
