Flood Control District: On Tuesday, Liberty County Commissioners, at their regular meeting, approved entering into the newly created Southeast Texas Flood Control District. This new flood control district is made up of the 8 counties of Jasper, Tyler, Newton, Orange, Chambers, Hardin, Jefferson and Liberty. David Douglas - Flood Plain Administrator for Liberty Co., said the money allotted for a study is expected to be $40 million. Each county is required to contribute one-tenth of one percent of their sales tax. For Liberty County that one-time contribution will be around $5,000. With strength in numbers, Douglas said that will give Liberty County a better chance at a portion of the soon to be available funds from the Texas General Land Office.
Fire: The City of Liberty Fire Department was called to a dwelling fire Tuesday to 1021 Washington St.. Liberty Fire Chief Brian Hurst said firefighters found flames in the living room and even coming out of the front window. Fire Chief Hurst said the blaze moved into the attic and heavily damaged the home. That property, at 1021 Washington St. in Liberty, is owned by Anthony Semien.
The Woodrow Way: Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Dayton has created the “Woodrow Way” to help get, and then keep, students attention in the classroom. The Woodrow Way is a universal call to action students are expected to drop everything to pay attention. A staff teacher, a substitute, or principal will call out the challenge by saying- quoting now: “Woodrow Way” – end quote. Students are then to respond - quote: “Future Broncos” - end quote. Woodrow Wilson Principal Matt Barnett, on the Party Line Wednesday, said students were taught this during their orientation period, the first week of school. Then with the students full attention, teachers and administrators can give emergency or non-emergency instructions. Then they know each student is giving their full attention. Then, according to the Woodrow Wilson principal, that makes getting kids attention easier.
The Bearded Wonder: Maybe you have noticed some Liberty Co. Sheriff’s Deputies sporting beards in November. It was not your imagination. Some Sheriff’s Department personnel participated in a beard growing contest to benefit St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. According to Capt. Ken DeFoor of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Forensic Investigator - Vita O’Reilly conducted public voting on Sheriff Bobby Rader’s Facebook page. Investigator O’Reilly said the winner was Deputy John Bennett, 2nd Deputy James Ott and 3rd was Sgt. Ivan Gonzalez. That was the top three. By winning the contest Deputy Bennett will be able to disregard the agencies Standard Operating Procedures about being clean shaven in the uniform division. He can keep his beard throughout December.
Scenic Hero: Texas State Sen. Robert Nichols, who represents Liberty Co., was awarded a Scenic Hero award, recognizing his work in the Texas Legislature and its significant impact on the scenic mission in the Lone Star State while reducing the maximum height for new billboards to 50 feet.
