Primary Candidates: Monday was the filing deadline to register as a candidate in the March 2020 Republican and Democratic Primaries. Starting with the newly created County Court at Law #2. Five candidates have filed to be on thay ballot in the Republican Primary. They are, Terry Denise Bacon, Wesley N. Hinch, Zack Zbranek, Farrah Hernandez Harper, and Michelle Mangum-Merendino. Two have filed to run for Liberty Co. District Attorney: Incumbent Logan Pickett, and Challenger Jennifer L. Bergman-Harkness. Four are seeking the GOP nomination for Co. Commissioner Precinct 1: Incumbent Bruce Karbowski, Toby Wilburn, James Carson, and Rodney A. Williams. For Co. Commissioner Precinct 3 Incumbent James “Boo” Reeves and challenger-David S. Whitmire. Four have filed for Constable Precinct 1 with no incumbent: Tammy Bishop, Bill Griffin, Jacob Cantu, and Wayne Moody. For Constable Precinct 4: Incumbent Robert “Robbie” Thornton Jr. and Challenger Gordon Bean. Constable Precinct 6 has three candidates: Incumbent John Joslin is challenged by Zack Harkness, and Cedric McDuffie. In the March Democratic Primary is Ronald Blake for Commissioner Precinct 1. For Constable Pct.1 Martin Trahan and for the Democratic nomination as Co. Commissioner Precinct #3 Barbara E. McIntyre. Primary Election Day for both the Democratic and Republican Party primaries is Tuesday March 3rd, 2020.
New Tax Collection Attorneys: At Tuesday’s Liberty County Commissioners regular meeting-the court ratified an agreement with Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson out of Austin to be the tax collections attorneys for the County. The vote to change tax collection attorneys was 3-1 with Precinct 4 Commissioner Leon Wilson as the lone vote against hiring the new firm. Commissioner Wilson said he felt there were plenty of local firms that could handle the job. Linebarger replaces Davis & Fielder of Dayton as the collection attorney’s for the county. Davis & Fielder have handled the county’s collections since 2010.
Civil Disobedience: A candidate for Liberty County Commissioners court threatened civil disobedience during the public comment portion of yesterdays Liberty County Commissioners Court Meeting. Ron Blake, Democratic candidate for Commissioner Precinct 1 told commissioners he felt the meeting of the Liberty County Historical Society being held on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday was wrong, perhaps he said, even racist. The by-laws of the Liberty County Historical Commission require a meeting be held on the 3rd Monday four months of the year, starting in January. The 3rd Monday is also a federal holiday set aside to honor civil rights legend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ron Blake promised to chain himself to the Jack Hartel building this January if the Historical Commission holds there meeting on Martin Luther King Day.
Panther Players Christmas Plays: Both the Liberty Middle School and Liberty High School Panther Players drama classes are proud to present four short One Act Christmas plays on the 16th of December at the LHS Black Box Theater starting at 6 p.m. The event will begin with LHS intro class and continue with the middle school third period intro class. There is no admission to attend, but seating is limited so come early.
