Political Candidates: The filing deadline for candidates wanting to run for an office in Liberty County has passed. The final day to file was Monday. Liberty County Republican Party Chair Ryan Daniel said in the March 2020 primary election, 7 offices will be contested. On the Democratic side of the March primary Liberty County Democratic Party Chairman Michael Mark said 3 people signed up to run for office on the Democratic Ticket. The Primary election is Tuesday March 3rd. Winners of the primary contest move to the general election to be held on Tuesday November 3rd.

Allegiance Ambulance: As we have reported, in November the Dayton City Council voted to change the city ambulance service provider. Allegiance Mobile Health will replace longtime service provider Liberty County EMS in January. Robert Vine Dayton Deputy City Manager and Chief of Police said a new computer program that will be provided by Allegiance Mobile Health lets City of Dayton dispatchers see which ambulance is closer to a call, cutting the time of response. Allegiance Mobile Health takes over EMS Service in Dayton on January 1st. The new Ambulance service is in the City of Dayton only. Liberty County EMS continues to provide service in the unincorporated areas of Liberty County.

Liberty City Council: The Liberty City Council will meet in regular meeting tonight at 6 pm in council chambers at Liberty City Hall. Among other agenda items council will discuss the master fee schedule for fire department inspections and permit fees. In addition, council will also hear a report from Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett on meetings of the Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency. Finally, among other items on tonight’s agenda, council will consider an amendment to the lease agreement to operate the restaurant set to open early next year, at the Liberty Municipal Golf Course.

UIL Reclassification: Every two years the University Interscholastic League reclassifies schools based on enrolment numbers. The UIL has released its school classification for the 2020-2022 and there have been some changes in the classifications at area schools. Starting on the north end of Liberty County Cleveland ISD will move from Class 5A Division 2 to the larger Class 5A Division 1 because of increased enrollment numbers. Tarkington ISD saw a drop in enrollment numbers and moves from Class 4A Division 2 into Class 3A Division 1. Early next year the UIL will announce the districts these teams will play in for the next 2 years.

Applicator Recertification: The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Liberty is offering an Applicator Recertification class this Thursday. The Recertification class is for those who already hold an applicator license in need of continuing education. Cost of the class is 40 dollars and includes lunch. The class starts at 8AM and runs until about 2:30 at the County Extension office at 501 Palmer Ave in Liberty. For more information or to register call 936-334-3230
