Identity of Body: We reported recently, a body was found in the Trinity River the day before Thanksgiving. That individual has now been identified as a 40-year old Kenefick resident, Kevin Scott Sowell. Officers of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department reported, at the time, that two boaters made the gruesome discovery Wednesday, November 27. They had come upon a rapidly decomposing body floating in the Trinity River said to be in the Kenefick Plaza area. Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputies and Texas Game Warden Lauren Iles, along with the boaters, all worked with local volunteer firefighters to recover the body. Justice of the Peace Larry Wilburn said, at that time, there was no obvious cause of death but the deceased had been dead for around two weeks. Cause of death is still undetermined as officials wait on results from the toxicology report. We are told that could take up to 6 weeks. The autopsy was conducted at the Jefferson County Medical Examiners office.
Autism and Law Enforcement: According to a news release from Capt. Ken Defoor - at the monthly general meeting of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department staff, they heard from two featured speakers that represent two different organizations that have now joined hands to educate and promote an awareness of dealing with those with Autism. Marion Campbell, who is Region 5 Coordinator for Partners Resource Network and the second, Belinda Hernandez of the Raising Awesome Awareness organization. They spoke to Liberty Co. Sheriff’s deputies and staff from a perspective of their own family and the issues and lack of a full understanding the public has, regarding Autism. Liberty Co. deputies heard about the three stages often associated with Autism and then how to approach and deal with those with Autism. The officers and the public can reach Coordinator Marion Campbell by calling 409-898-4684 and Belinda Hernandez at 936-776-1310.
Sidewalk Improvements: A sidewalk improvement is planned in the city of Liberty. The new sidewalk improvement will allow people to access businesses on the eastside of the court house more safely. The Main Street sidewalk project will get underway early next year.
