Volume 34, No. 191 Wednesday, November 13, 2019
************************************************ Flood Buyout: Liberty County has been approved for $6.1 million in grant funding to begin buyouts of flood-prone properties along the Trinity River. The target areas that have been prioritized for the first grant funding are Sam Houston Lake Estates and New River Lake Estates, both in north Liberty County. David Douglas, engineering administrator and grant coordinator for Liberty County said Liberty County has the distinction of being the very first contract for buyouts in the State of Texas. The contract between Liberty County and the General Land Office of Texas, which is coordinating the FEMA grant funding within the state, was signed by Liberty County Judge Jay Knight Tuesday afternoon, following the contracts approval at Tuesday’s regular commissioner’s court meeting. In the coming weeks, the county will start the formal process of accepting applications and appraising the homes of interested individuals.
Open Enrollment: If you've previously had employer-sponsored health insurance or have been covered by a family healthcare plan, you may not be familiar with open enrollment for the affordable care act aka: Obama care. But if you need to buy your own health insurance this year, open enrollment is an important time period in which to pay close attention. Even if you have an existing individual health insurance plan, you don't want to ignore the open enrollment period. Open enrollment for 2020 health coverage runs from November 1st to December 15th, 2019. If you miss the open enrollment period for affordable care, you won't be able to enroll in a plan unless you have a qualifying event that triggers a special enrollment period.
St. Jude Challenge: In the coming days and weeks, the public may see nine Liberty County Deputy Sheriffs sporting beards, which are normally not allowed for uniformed personnel. However, the relaxing of agency policy for the month of November is for a very good cause. This temporary change in deputy appearance resulted when Patrol Captain Robert Dunn became aware that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was having a fundraising effort for further research in keeping with their motto of “Finding Cures, Saving Children.” Liberty County Sheriffs Captain Ken Defoor said if you see one or more of these nine uniformed LCSO deputies sporting a beard this month, others might like to also meet their challenge and consider donating to the efforts of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by calling 1-800-822-6344 and requesting a donation form.
Obituaries: Barbara Ann Gibson, 78, Liberty. Service Sunday 1 pm at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.*** Mary Francis Tarver, 83 of Anahuac. Service Saturday 11 am First Baptist Church of Anahuac (PM).
