Fatality: A chain reaction crash claimed the lives of two people early Sunday morning. Law enforcement reports tell us Luke Whitworth, 24, lost control of his pickup on FM 1008 about 2 am Sunday. He crashed into a tree. Two people in a passing car stopped to help, pulling their vehicle off the roadway and into the grass near the pickup truck. A third vehicle driven by Daniel Herrera-32, of Dayton, struck the good Samaritan - Eleazar Limon - age 43, killing the Dayton woman. The driver of the original accident, Luke Whitworth was flown by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he died in surgery. Daniel Herrera, driver of the third involved vehicle was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was treated and released. A passenger in vehicle #3, Valerie Dawn Boone, 34, was also flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital. She too was treated and released. So, two died in a three vehicle crash early Sunday on FM 1008.

Pan American: The USA girls took the title of the U-17 women’s Pan American championship with Liberty softball standout Kaci West in a key role, going 8-0 in championship play. Kaci’s team outscored their opponents 67-9. Kaci West played in 6 of 8 games held in the south American Country of Colombia.

Property tax statements: Tax assessor collector Richard Brown said property tax statements to Liberty County property owners are not yet ready to be mailed. His department goes through an elaborate cross checking process before going in the mail. They will be mailed either late this week or early next week, at the latest. There should be no mail delays from the recent storm. Richard Brown said more than 100,000 tax statements will soon be mailed.

Liberty Storm Debris: The City of Liberty has announced DRC Emergency Services has completed the first pass of debris removal. DRC will begin the final Tropical Storm Imelda debris removal Monday October 28th. DRC will cease their operation, Friday November 1st. If storm debris at your residence has not been picked up by Wednesday October 30th the city asks you call them at 936-336-3684.
