Liberty Debris Removal: The City of Liberty will begin storm debris removal today. The city has hired DRC Emergency Services to remove debris from the impact of Tropical Storm Imelda. All storm related debris should be placed near the edge of the street as soon as possible. DRC is not authorized to enter private property and any debris not placed near the street will not be picked up. This operation does not include debris pick up at commercial properties. The city anticipates the first debris removal pass will be completed by October 25th. DRC will then make a second pass to pick up additional debris removal. If debris in front of your residence is not picked up before October 25th call the City at 936-336-3684. A reminder this debris pick up only applies to residences in the City of Liberty.
Employee of the Month: The call from the dispatcher to Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Chance Maddox and his trainee partner, Deputy Vicki Gardiner, was what most law enforcement personnel consider to be a routine well fair check. As deputies approached the complainants front door, they saw a man standing inside near the plate glass window holding a rifle, trying work the mechanism while a relative stood in the doorway. The relative went inside the home and tried to talk the man into dropping the weapon. Officers said with the mental state the man was in, the deputies thought it was they who were the enemy and they believed he was going to defend himself. The relative managed to grab the rifle barrel while Deputy Maddox quickly neutralized the situation with use of his tazer. Sheriff Bobby Rader and his entire agency ask the public to salute Deputy Chance Maddox who has been selected the Employee of the Month for October, 2019.
Obituaries: William Joseph “Bill” Pickens, 73, of Liberty. Funeral service is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Line Camp Cowboy Church in Devers (AFS).
