County Budget: Liberty County Commissioners approved the 2020 Fiscal Year budget during Tuesday’s regular meeting. Liberty County Judge Jay Knight said it’s a balanced budget that maintains the same tax rate as the 2019 budget. The 2020 Fiscal Year budget begins on October 1 of this year and runs through September 30, 2020. The largest percentage increase in expenditures in the General Fund is 18 percent from Judicial Sources. The majority of the increase is due to the creation of County Court at Law #2 by the Texas Legislature. The largest dollar increase in expenditures is in Public Safety with an increase of $1,845,486 or 12 percent.Again, Liberty County commissioners adopted a balanced budget for the 2020 Fiscal Year. It is funded with a tax rate of 57.88 cents per $100 in value - that is unchanged from the current budget.
Scam: Be aware of another scam being worked in the Cleveland School District and surrounding area. We are told these thieves are aggressive in attempts to sell marketing materials. They claim they represent Spirit Stop in Grand Prairie and are selling products for the Cleveland School District. Cleveland ISD officials say they ARE NOT affiliated with this company.
Voter Registration: Here’s a reminder. October 7 is the last day to register to vote for the November 5, 2019 election. That election includes several amendments in a Statewide Special Election. Voters will accept or reject proposed Texas Constitutional amendments from the recent Legislative Session. Here in Liberty County, it also includes a Local Option Election to accept or reject the proposed change for alcohol sales, including mixed drinks, in JP Precinct 6, excluding the two cities of Cleveland and North Cleveland. The election does include the Cleveland ISD school bond election and Liberty Co. Emergency Services District #7 sales tax election. In Liberty County, voters not registered, or those who have not voted in several elections that may have been purged from voter roles may register again at the Tax Assessor/Collector’s office. Call 936-336-4528 for more information and if you are not sure to check to see if you are registered.
Stick Horse: Every year, some kiddos spend hours, or maybe the parents do, decorating a favorite stick horse for the annual Stick Horse Competition held at the TVE Fair and Rodeo. That TVE Stick Horse Competition is Wednesday, October 16 at 6pm in the TVE Rodeo Arena. This competition is kids ages 3-6. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, October 10.
