Student Count: No surprise, student enrollment numbers are up in Liberty County. The seven school districts across Liberty Co. report an overall total of 18,395 students. All saw a rise in student numbers. The largest district in Liberty County, Cleveland Independent School District now has a stunning 7,396 students. In Dayton ISD they have 5,480 kids in classrooms. Checking the Liberty ISD count it was 2,237. Then in Hardin ISD, administrators report total enrollment was 1,414. The Devers ISD recorded head count is 198 kids this year in their pre-k through eighth grades. At Hull-Daisetta, 510 kids are registered for class. Moving back to north Liberty County, Tarkington ISD says their enrollment is 1,824. There is always a shift in numbers after Labor Day so we will check back again next week. Again, enrollment at all Liberty Co schools is up.
New EMS in Cleveland: Cleveland City Council approved a three-year contract with Allegiance Mobile Health for ambulance service. That move came at a special meeting on Aug. 27. The contract, which begins on Sept. 1, will cost the city $45,000 annually for round-the-clock ambulance service 365 days a year. We are told Allegiance Mobile Health came in with lower bid for ambulance service than did City Ambulance in Cleveland at $150,000 annually, AMR bid $497,000 annually. Meanwhile, Liberty County EMS, which holds the contract for ambulance service now through the end of August, did not submit a new bid for service and offered instead to renegotiate the existing contract. The previous contract with Liberty County EMS was for $50,000 per year without the guarantee of an ambulance dedicated to the City of Cleveland. The renegotiated rate with Liberty County EMS would have been $130,000 for the same level of service or $608,000 to provide round-the-clock coverage. Council voted 4-1 in favor of the contract with Allegiance Mobile Health. Cleveland Council member Bergman-Harkness voted against the deal.
Hardin and Hull-Daisetta: The Hardin Hornets start their 2019 football season Friday at home facing the Beaumont Legacy Christian Academy Warriors. Friday’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Hornet Stadium. Turning to Hull-Daisetta, the Bobcats open their season Friday night at home against the Burkeville Mustangs.
