The very popular annual back-to-school sales tax holiday is this Friday through Sunday. According to Texas Comptroller Glen Hegar’s website, the three-day period offers shoppers in Texas a chance to save money on certain back-to-school items that are priced under $100. A yearly event since 1999, this year’s annual tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends at midnight Sunday. Lists of apparel and school supplies that are tax-free can be found on the Texas Comptroller’s website – you can link there from, just click on the government tab under local information.
The City of Liberty’s waste water treatment plant sits in a rather low area just south of Hwy 90. That low lying area has caused problems over the years as high water events have caused damage to the facility. Liberty City Manager Tom Warner said in Harvey the plant went down for about 3 weeks. Now the city has completed the grant application and has been authorized to do the design for a flood protection levee. The City of Liberty will submit their plan for a levee system to protect the waste water treatment facility to the State of Texas, with hopes the grant will be funded for the roughly $5 million project.
The 10 school districts across Liberty and Chambers counties have varied start dates this year. The Anahuac and Barbers Hill Independent School Districts both begin classes August 15th. East Chambers heads back to class August 26th. Around the Liberty county students return to the classroom from August 8th in Devers, to the 15th, in Dayton, Hardin and Hull Daisetta. Liberty ISD students report for the first day of school on August 20th, and the Cleveland and Tarkington districts are back the next day, on August 21st.
