Brief Scare at Waltmart: A report of a man with a gun in the Liberty Walmart Saturday night turned out to be a plumber working on the store’s clogged toilets. Despite the fact the initial report was false, Liberty Police Lt. Chip Fairchild said it is a good example of local law enforcement agencies working well with one another and responding quickly to a potential threat. In addition to the quick response from law enforcement, Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center CEO Matt Thornton said the hospital immediately called in extra staff to deal with the possibility of incoming injuries. Once more, Saturday’s report of a gunman at the Liberty Walmart turned out to be a non-incident involving a plumber repairing the store’s clogged toilets.
Deputy Whitten’s Condition: Texas Rangers are continuing to investigate last Wednesday’s multiple shootings in North Liberty County, but they are not releasing any new details on this case. However, we do have a family update on the wounded deputy’s condition. We reported Deputy Richard Whitten was transported by Life Flight air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital after being shot in the neck and spine. Over the weekend, Deputy Whitten’s family released a very short statement saying he was “in serious but stable condition making progress”.
Hurricane Workshop: The 2019 Liberty County Hurricane Preparedness Workshop is tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the Jack Hartel Community Center in Liberty. She said the speakers include officials from the National Weather Service and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Everyone is welcome.
