Deputy, 3 Others Shot: Texas Rangers are investigating four shootings in north Liberty County. One of those victims died. We began reporting yesterday around 8:30 a.m. that a Liberty County sheriff’s deputy and three others had been shot by a man identified as Pavol Vido. The deputy was wounded when confronting the suspect in a separate shooting at B Dependable Plumbing on S.H. 321 near Cleveland. Deputy Richard Whitten spotted Vido driving a vehicle and followed him to the Big Thicket Veterinarian Clinic on S.H. 321. There, he confronted the suspect who shot the deputy in the neck. Deputy Whitten, who has been with the department for four years, was taken by Life Flight air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. At last report, he is said to be in stable condition. We are told three people were shot at B Dependable Plumbing, including the woman who died. At last report, Texas Rangers had not released those victims’ names. Pavol Vido also died yesterday, presumably of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was cornered at a property near the locations of the other shootings.

Homeowner Assistance Center: The Texas General Land Office has opened a Homeowner Assistance Mobile Intake Center in north Liberty County to serve homeowners who are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey. It will be open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Plum Grove Volunteer Fire Department on FM 1010. You can learn more about the program and review the Homeowner Assistance Program Checklist online at recovery.texas.gov.

Free Fishing Day: We are told that Texas is one of the best places in the nation for fishing, and this Saturday you can wet a line anywhere in the state free. As part of National Fishing Day and Boating Week, this Saturday residents and visitors alike will be able to fish or crab anywhere in Texas without a fishing license. Texas Game Warden Jake Noxson reminds those taking advantage of Saturday’s statewide free fishing day that all state regulations still apply. In a related note, hunters and anglers can take the Outdoor Annual that contains those regulations into the field via a free app available on iPhone and Android devices.
