Employment Numbers: The employment picture for Liberty County is improving, but the local jobless rate still remains higher than both the statewide and national figures. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the unemployment rate for April here in Liberty County was 4.1 percent. That is improved from 5.7 percent a year ago. The jobless rate for all Texas dropped to 3 percent in April while the U.S. unemployment figure for April dipped to 3.3 percent. That data is what’s called the non-adjusted rate, meaning it has not been statistically altered for any seasonal changes. Taking a closer look at local numbers, as of the latest reporting period this April, there are now 31,090 Liberty County residents who have a job – that’s an improvement of 697 residents who have found work since this same time last year. The latest unemployment figures show there are 1,344 locals who have been unable to find a job.
Nixle Signup: The Liberty County Office of Emergency Management and the City of Liberty have a way to notify residents of any type of urgent situation, from severe weather to other types of natural or man-made emergencies, including street and road closures. It’s called Nixle. With hurricane season gearing up to start June 1, now is an excellent time to signup for that countywide notification system if you haven’t already done it. To sign up for Nixle, you can register your cell phone by texting your zip code to 888-777. You can also register online by going to our website at and clicking on the Nixle link on lower left side of our homepage.
Backyard Farmer Series: The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Liberty County will hold another class in its Backyard Farmer Series next Tuesday, May 28.
