Dayton FFA Livestock Show: The 70th Annual Dayton FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo concluded Saturday after four days of excitement. As for the all-important livestock auction - with add-ons and re-sales, it brought in $223,755 for the students of the Dayton school district. This year’s volume buyer was Lopez Roofing and Construction. The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Hunter Muskiet. It was purchased by Thrif-tee Food Center at $10 a pound for a grand total of $12,000. The Reserve Champion Steer - exhibited by Layne Bode - sold to Lopez Roofing and Construction for $8 a pound. That’s a total of $9,600. During Saturday’s festivities, the 70th Annual Dayton FFA Livestock Show was dedicated to Larry Ubnoskye.
Hurricane Evacuation Assistance: Hurricane season begins June 1 and continues through November 30. That means the time to prepare for the possibility of a hurricane making landfall along the upper Texas gulf coast is now. For those who might need help evacuating, should a hurricane make landfall in our area, that preparation means registering with the state for any help you or your loved ones might need. Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Crista Beasley-Adams said registration is easy and should be done by calling 2-1-1 or going online to the state registry – that can be accessed from the top of our homepage at Mrs. Beasley-Adams said those needing help during an evacuation should register now - not when a hurricane is in the gulf. Also, even if you registered in past years, you still need to re-signup again this year.
Bank Robbery Plea: An 18-year-old LaPorte man has pleaded guilty to bank robbery in the Eastern District of Texas. We reported Texas First Bank – formerly Hull State Bank – was robbed on the morning of March 6. Prosecutors say video surveillance shows the teen entering Texas First Bank in Hull and handing a threatening note to a teller. He left the bank with $7,350 in cash. Now, Aaron Gonzalez has pleaded guilty to Bank Robbery. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing.
Memorial Blood Drive: A memorial blood drive in honor of the late Eric Latz will be held this Friday, May 24, from noon to 5:30 p.m. at the Liberty Center at City Hall. Latz, who passed away last Tuesday, worked at KSHN Radio for 24 years.
