School Threat: Cleveland ISD campuses were locked down for about an hour and a half Tuesday afternoon after both the Liberty and Montgomery counties sheriffs’ offices received a call from someone threatening to “shoot up the Cleveland school”. Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said all of the Cleveland school district’s campuses remained lockdown until law enforcement officials determined it was safe for parents to pickup their children. An unidentified 17-year-old female student was detained by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and the investigation into Tuesday afternoon’s threat is ongoing.
Trinity River Bridge at FM 787: Traffic on the Trinity River Bridge along FM 787 in far north Liberty County is now down to one lane due to erosion to the eastern approach of the bridge. Temporary traffic signals have been installed on each side of the bridge to direct drivers when it’s safe to cross. Texas Department of Transportation officials say a project to stabilize the embankment along the river is being developed. However, they did not provide a time frame for correcting the problem. Drivers can use State Highway 105 as an alternative route.
Chamber Lunch: This month’s Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce’s noon luncheon is next Wednesday, May 22, at the Liberty Center. Guest speaker is Betty Russo. She is a professional community and economic developer regional representative with Governor Greg Abbott’s office. The $12 meal will be served by Executive Chef Pamala Talbot of Blue Plate Catering. Serving will begin at 11:45 a.m. For reservations, call the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber during business hours at 936-336-5736 or email
Historic Cemetery: The Liberty County Historical Commission will honor Cooke-Griffin Methodist Cemetery with a Historic Texas Cemetery designation this Sunday at 2 p.m. The cemetery is on Lakeland Drive in Liberty. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and support the commission.
