Volume 34, No. 89 Monday, May 13, 2019
Game Rooms: Texas lawmakers continue to target game room operations through legislative action. While a number of related bills have been filed in an effort to target game rooms statewide, one authored by District 18 Rep. Ernest Bailes is specific to Liberty County. His legislative District 18 includes Liberty, San Jacinto and Walker counties. House Bill 389 was co-sponsored by Sen. Robert Nichols. He serves Senate District 3, which includes Liberty County plus 18 other counties in East Texas. House Bill 389 – authored by Rep. Ernest Bailes and co-sponsored by Senator Robert Nichols – has passed the Texas House and is awaiting vote in the state Senate.
Eric Latz: On Saturday we reported the news of our long time announcer and news reporter Eric Latz. Thursday afternoon Mr. Latz was put in the hospital with a serious infection, by Saturday morning he was being kept in a medically induced coma and in addition had been diagnosed with leukemia. His sister reported Saturday afternoon he was being transferred to Hermann Hospital in Houston where he is said to be in very critical condition. The family wanted to express their thanks to the many people who have reached out with prayers. Here at the radio station we also would like to express our gratitude to the listening audience. A special blood drive to benefit Eric is being arranged and will be held very soon. Eric Latz has been working at KSHN Radio for 23 years.
School Finance: Texas State Senator Robert Nichols writes a weekly column called My Five Cents. This week he included education in that column. This week, the Senate passed HB 3, the school finance bill. With 110 amendments proposed for this bill, there was approximately 8 hours of debate in determining what the bill would contain. As currently written, it will give teachers and librarians a $5,000 pay raise, fund full day pre-k for low-income students, and increase base funding per student in each school district. The bill also increases funding for dual language programs, dyslexic and special education students and career and technology education. The bill will now head back to the House and a conference committee made up of members from both chambers will work out the differences within the bill.
Obituaries: Katherene Mae Tolar, 91, of Daisetta. Service will be 2:00 p.m., today at Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
