Drowning Investigation: Liberty County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a drowning in Lake Granada in the Moss Bluff area. Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said the department received a report of a body floating in that lake Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. Captain DeFoor said, at this preliminary point in the investigation, sheriff’s investigators say 73-year-old Jack Wilmer Eatmon may have walked from the rear of his property on County Road 133 north and slipped or fell into the lake. Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Judge Stephen Hebert conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy. Captain DeFoor said the sheriff’s investigation is ongoing.
Fatality Accident: A 47-year-old Liberty man died Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on State Highway 61 at County Road 109 south of Devers. DPS Sgt. Eric Burse reports 76-year-old Fred Marberry was southbound on S.H. 61 when he turned into the path of a northbound pickup truck driven by 36-year-old Brian Stanton of Beaumont. Sgt. Burse said the passenger in Mr. Marberry’s vehicle, identified as 47-year-old Robert Marberry, died in that crash. Robert was a longtime employee at the Whataburger restaurant in Liberty.
Share the Road with Motorcycles: TxDOT is launching a campaign called “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” in conjunction with May’s National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. TxDOT officials urge motorists to look twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections. Always assume motorcycles are closer than they appear to be, and avoid turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Use turn signals and check blind spots before changing lanes. Be sure to maintain a safe following distance and give motorcyclists a full lane, especially when passing. Always obey posted speed limits.
