Property Value Protests: Official deadline for most property owners to file a written notice of protest of their appraised values is a week from today – that’s Wednesday, May 15. The actual protest will come later, but you must indicate your intention to protest by next Wednesday. Liberty County Chief Appraiser Lana McCarty said 56,524 property value notices have been mailed out. Last year, 4,259 protests were filed and about 860 of those went all the way to a hearing before the appraisal review board while the others were resolved in some way prior to that by staff and property owners. Also, Mrs. McCarty said property owners with damage from storms, floods or fire last year - who have not yet reported that damage - should do so as soon as possible. For info, call Liberty County CAD at 936-336-5722.
Lions Scholarships: Liberty Lions Club has announced $27,500 in scholarships for graduating seniors of Liberty High School. Receiving $5,000 scholarships are Caitlyn Sepulvado, TaNia Donatto, Abigail Hajovsky and Catherine Moorman. Six $1,250 scholarships go to J.J. Slack, Katelyn Mealer, David Hebert, Lauren Dugat, Kori Tulley and Jordan Lenormand.
Homebuyers Workshop: The City of Dayton will be helping first-time homebuyers by offering another free Home Buyers Program Workshop on Saturday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m. in the Dayton Community Center. It features local lenders, brokers and realtors with information on credit repair, budgeting, listings of available homes and more. For info, call 281-830-3948.
Vick Service: Funeral service for Terry Ben Vick of Liberty is tomorrow. The Army veteran, who died back on April 9 at age 60, has no surviving family members. With that in mind, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Mark McClelland said fellow veterans and members of the community are coming together to ensure Mr. Vick is properly memorialized with a graveside service tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Hardin Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Allison Funeral Service. Everyone is welcome.
Obituaries: Fannie Emerline Carlton Joiner, 74, of Dayton. Service is 3 p.m. Thursday at Reeves Cemetery in Old River (PSFH). Linda Irene Siple, 79, of Baytown. Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Sterling-White FH in Highlands.
