Economic Development: Liberty County Judge Jay Knight has been actively working to combine the county’s various economic development organizations together to coordinate plans to attract new businesses. He said getting county and city government officials to unite their economic development efforts has been started and stopped several times through the years. However, the county judge said the oncoming population growth headed this way must be treated as a regional issue. Judge Knight said the days when this county was limited to being primarily an agricultural center are over. He said Liberty County will be vying with neighboring Harris County for a wide range of commercial and industrial prospects in the very near future.
LISD Education Foundation: The Liberty ISD Education Foundation has awarded nine grants for innovative teaching ideas on three of the district’s campuses. This year’s grants total $9,137, bringing the 12-year cumulative sum to $208,756. Established in 2007 with the aid of the Miles Foundation, the LISD Education Foundation is a non-profit 501-C-3 organization that funds unique teaching ideas and resources that go beyond the district’s normal operating budget.
Free Tetanus Vaccines: The Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center Rural Health Clinic is offering free tetanus vaccinations while supplies last. Shots will be available Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility on North Travis Street in Liberty is closed from noon to 1 for lunch. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. The Center for Disease Control recommends children get that shot at 11 or 12 years of age. Adults should get a tetanus vaccine every 10 years to stay protected. If you don’t remember when you last had a tetanus vaccine, it is probably time. Experts say it will not cause problems if it has not been a full 10 years.
Shred It: Start getting together sensitive documents and unwanted electronics for the next City of Liberty free document shredding and electronics recycling event on Saturday, May 11. It’s at the Liberty City Hall parking lot starting at 9 a.m.
Obituaries: William B. Dickson, 89, of Liberty. Service is noon Saturday at Berean Tabernacle Baptist Church (SFH).
