Free Measles Vaccinations: Reports of measles cases across the U.S. have risen in recent weeks, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 555 cases in 20 states so far this year as of last Thursday. That is the highest total in the past five years. Experts say measles is a contagious virus that is mostly preventable with a vaccination. With that in mind, several local businesses are teaming up to offer a free measles, mumps and rubella or MMR vaccination clinic on Saturday, April 27. It’s from 8 a.m. to noon at the Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center Rural Health Clinic on North Travis Street in Liberty. No appointment is necessary. It is for both children and adults who have not already been vaccinated. The free measles vaccinations are made possible by First Liberty National Bank, the Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center, KSHN Radio and Texas Vaccines for Children. For information, call the clinic at 936-336-9175.

New LISD CFO: The Liberty school district will soon have a new chief financial officer. During Tuesday’s regular meeting, Liberty ISD trustees hired CPA Ginger Ramer to replace Julie Hebert who has been with the district since 2013. As we’ve reported several months ago, Mrs. Hebert announced she was leaving the Liberty school district July 31 to pursue a career in the insurance industry. Mrs. Ramer will join LISD in May and work alongside Julie Hebert during a short transitional period. Mrs. Hebert has assured the Liberty school board she will also be available after her final day in July to consult with the new chief financial officer if necessary. Ginger Ramer comes to LISD from the Humble school district.

DCDC Applies for Grant: Dayton Community Development Corporation is applying for grant money through the federally funded Economic Development Administration. That agency provides grant funding to local government entities to support economic development in financially strapped communities. City Manager Theo Melancon said traditionally Dayton has been ineligible for these types of grants; however, as part of the area that suffered damage from Hurricane Harvey, Dayton does qualify for a one-time application for EDA funding. If approved, the city could get more than $5 million for renovating Stillson Road near the Gulf Inland Logistics Park on S.H. 146 South as well as installing water and sewer service to that area.
