Good Friday Closings: This coming Friday, April 19, is Good Friday. The Liberty County Courthouse and all municipal offices in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland will be closed Friday in observance of the holiday. However, banks and post offices will be open for regular hours. Also, garbage service will run as scheduled Friday in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland.

Dayton Council: At Monday’s meeting, a 3-2 vote by Dayton City Council resulted in cancelling plans to remodel part of the Dayton Community Center to serve as a new City Council Chambers and meeting room for other events. We reported the council previously approved moving forward with the planning phase of the remodeling job. Monday, Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said the bidding process for the remodeling project did not result in cost-effective bids.

Sales Tax Holiday: The state’s fourth annual Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday is set for Saturday through Monday, April 27-29. Items that can be purchased tax free include batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced at less than $75. Also included are hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced less than $300 as well as portable generators costing under $3,000. Purchases that do not qualify include batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles. Also excluded are camping stoves and camping supplies as well as chainsaws. A list of emergency preparation supplies that may be purchased tax-free is available on the state comptroller’s website – link there from www.kshn.com.

Easter Sunrise Service: The public is invited to Sterling Funeral Home’s annual community Easter Sunrise Service this Sunday at Palms Memorial Park. Led by the Dayton Ministerial Alliance, it begins Sunday morning at 7 o’clock in Palms Memorial Park Cemetery on State Highway 146 South. Refreshments will be served by Sterling Funeral Home. You’re encouraged to dress casual and bring a lawn chair.
