Freedom Ride, Chili Cookoff: There is still time to sign up for two special events set for this Saturday. The Liberty Freedom Ride for bicyclists, benefiting the Liberty ISD Education Foundation, is Saturday morning. In coordination, the Liberty Rotary Club will hold its annual Chili Cookoff. The Freedom Ride starts at 8 a.m. with five routes for bicyclists covering 20, 37, 50, 64 and 74 miles. All rides will start and end at Liberty City Hall, 1829 Sam Houston. For information or to signup as a rider or sponsor, go online to LibertyEducationFoundation.com or call Bruce Wright at 936-641-0367. Pre-registration is $35, but on Saturday morning it’s $40. As for the Liberty Rotary Club’s Chili Cookoff, it is also this Saturday at Liberty City Hall. Cost is $50 per team. For those who want to taste the chili, it’s $10 for all you can eat. For more information or to signup as a Chili Cookoff team or sponsor, send an email to tracy@tracywilliams.biz or go online to LibertyRotaryClub.com.

Scholarship Trusts Combined: First Liberty National Bank officers have announced creation of the South Liberty County Scholarship Trust. That’s a combination of the assets of the Richard C. and Esther Bellamy Educational Trust and the Paul Daniels Scholarship Trust. The trust department of the bank has served as the trustee of these two popular scholarship trusts since their inception. Combined, the two trusts have awarded a total of more than $2.9 million in scholarships through the years. Trust department officials with First Liberty National Bank said this consolidation will reduce the administrative costs as well as significantly increase the number of students who can benefit. The new trust was established to continue to benefit students from the local high schools of Liberty, Dayton, Hardin and Hull-Daisetta who will be attending four-year institutions with an added opportunity for scholarships to community colleges.

Relay for Life: The 19th Annual Liberty County Relay for Life is in the books. Organizers say this year’s relay at Liberty Memorial Stadium raised more than $47,000. That brings the 19-year total from this South Liberty County fund-raising event to approximately $1.55 million. The first lap of the event is always reserved for cancer survivors and caregivers. Then, around 8:30 p.m., there was a special luminary service to honor cancer survivors as well as those who are no longer with us.
