Scam Warning: The Social Security Administration has issued a new scam alert, reminding those receiving benefits to beware of the latest phone scams used by crooks. That includes attempts by scam callers to try and threaten people into giving them money for services for which the Social Security Administration does not charge. In fact, Andy Hardwick of the Houston Social Security office says if someone claims to be from Social Security and wants you to give them money, then they are not really from the government agency. He says never give out personal information, cash or gift cards to callers claiming to be from Social Security. If someone calls and says they are from Social Security, ask for their name, job title, reason for calling and the phone number of their office before telling them you will call back and hanging up. Then call Social Security to confirm their identity. The nationwide number is 800-772-1213. The Beaumont office is toll-free at 866-613-2864.
Count Clerk’s Office: Lee Haidusek Chambers has been at the helm of the Liberty County Clerk’s Office for about three months. Mrs. Chambers said this is a very busy time at the clerk’s office with new voting machines to be used in the May 4 General Election plus a new case management system being phased in. She said one half of her staff is dedicated to managing cases for county courts while the other is charged with the day-to-day customer service operations that include providing copies of legal documents such as birth and death certificates.
Dayton Chamber Lunch: The Dayton Chamber of Commerce’s monthly noon luncheon is next Tuesday, April 2, in the Dayton Community Center. This month’s speaker is Margaret Johnson. She is a professional engineer as well as a credentialed coach, inspirational speaker and trainer. The $15 meal will be catered by Chicken Express.
