Commissioners OK Tax Note: Liberty County Commissioners approved borrowing $2.63 million during yesterday’s regular meeting. Those funds will be used to pay for recent purchases authorized by commissioners. The projects include a new voting system, an electronic case management system plus a chiller for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and jail facility. Also during Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners voted to pay off the $3.27 million remaining on a 2010 Refunding General Obligation Bond. That was the bond issued back in 2010 to pay for the old Wal-Mart building on Main Street that a prior commissioners court planned to convert into county office space. The building has since been sold and the funds have been sitting in county coffers unused. County officials do not expect a tax change related to yesterday’s actions.
Plane Crash Update: A third body was recovered Tuesday afternoon from the crash site near Anahuac where a large Boeing 767 cargo plane went nose first into the Trinity Bay on Saturday. Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said late Monday he received notification confirming the identities of the two bodies already recovered. First Officer Conrad Aska, 44, the plane’s co-pilot was recovered Sunday. Jump seat rider Sean Archuleta, 36, was recovered Saturday. The plane’s pilot has been identified as Captain Rick Blakely. DNA testing will confirm if the body found Tuesday afternoon is that of the pilot.
