Habitual Offender: A 54-year-old Rye man has been sentenced on a drug possession charge as a habitual offender, despite not being in court for the jury’s sentencing verdict. Timothy Cornell was found guilty Tuesday by a jury in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield. He was set for sentencing Wednesday but failed to show. State law allows a trial to continue when the defendant is voluntarily absent. During the punishment phase, lead prosecutors presented evidence of the defendant’s prior five felony convictions. Under Texas law, habitual offenders may be sentenced from 25 to 99 years or life in prison. The jury deliberated for several hours before sentencing Timothy Cornell to 67 years in prison. Despite his long sentence, the habitual offender will be eligible for parole in seven years.

Golden’s Damage: Liberty police are investigating damage to the front of Golden’s Furniture on Main Street. Liberty Police Lt. Chip Fairchild said an alarm at the building sounded around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, police found a broken pane of glass on the store front along with some brick damage. A piece of furniture in the window was also slightly damaged. However, the vehicle that caused the damage was not there. At this time, police believe this was not a burglary attempt. Instead, it is thought to be an accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Liberty Police Department at 936-336-5666. Golden’s Jody Regen said the store remains open regular business hours.
