Election Signup Deadline: Tomorrow is the deadline for the candidate filing period in the regular May 4 city and school board elections. As reported, there is one exception to that deadline. Candidate filing in the Special Election to fill Paul Glazener’s Liberty City Council term is extended through March 4. So far, William Neal Thornton is the only candidate for that seat. As for the city and school elections in Liberty and Dayton, there is still only one contested race. That is between Barry Pruitt, Mark Richter and Chris Shumaker for Position 2 on the DISD Board of Trustees. As reported, the longtime Position 2 incumbent Larry Wadzeck is not running again.
Ames Election: There are now two names in the hat for mayor of the City of Ames. We reported longtime Ames Mayor John White said he would not run again for the post he has held since 1993. However, yesterday, Mayor White told KSHN he has since changed his mind after encouragement from others and will now seek re-election. He is facing a challenge from Reuben Williams. Late yesterday, Brandy C. Pruitt filed to run for Ames City Council Position 5. At last report, nobody has signed up for Position 1 or 3. Deadline to file to run for Ames mayor or city council is tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the city office on Martin Street.
Girls’ Basketball Playoffs: The Tarkington, Hull-Daisetta and Hardin-Jefferson girls’ basketball teams have all advanced to the Area round of the state playoffs. Class 2A Hull-Daisetta faces Shelbyville today at 6 p.m. in the Jasper High School gym. Class 4A Tarkington is matched against Sweeny tomorrow at 8 p.m. at LaPorte High School. Class 4A Hardin-Jefferson takes on North Forest tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Channelview High School.
Free Trees for Homeowners: The Texas A&M Forest Service will be giving away free trees tomorrow for homeowners wanting to enhance their landscape. This free, one-day giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Liberty Municipal Park. Forest service officials will be set up at the small gazebo near the playground area. The free trees include a variety of oaks. Other species may also be available. Experts tell us these trees are bare-root seedlings and will need to be planted within a day or two. For information, call the Texas A&M Forest Service at 936-336-4558, ext. 2440.
