Skimmer Alert: The Liberty Police Department is warning area residents that thieves continue to use skimming devices on fuel pumps. We reported back in mid-January that a skimmer device had been found on a fuel pump at Miller’s Shell on Highway 90 in Liberty. Now Liberty Police Lt. Chip Fairchild said a total of four more skimming devices have been located on pumps at Murphy USA in front of the Wal-Mart on the bypass in Liberty. Those skimming devices are secretly placed inside gas pumps by crooks to gather data from credit and debit cards. Police say the station owners were unaware the thieves had placed the devices on the pumps and are as much victims as their customers. Lt. Fairchild encourages customers to closely look at pumps before using a card to buy fuel. Make sure the pump has not been tampered with and the seals are intact. Lt. Fairchild said anyone who uses a credit card to pump gas should keep a close eye on their financial statements. He recommends not to use a debit card to buy gas because protections are better with a credit card when personal information is stolen.
