Candidate Filings: The candidate filing period for the May 4th City and School Board Elections continues through February 15th. Only the three incumbents have filed to run for Liberty City Council so far. Dennis Beasley, Diane Huddleston and Libby Simonson have all filed for a new term. There is also a Special Liberty City Council Election to fill the unexpired term of Council Member Paul Glazener. The only candidate so far, for that council seat is William Neal Thornton. The filing period for special election candidates is until March 4th. In the Dayton School Board Election, there is one candidate so far. DISD School Trustee Luke Chachere is seeking a new term at Position #1 on the Dayton School Board. His fellow incumbent Position #2 Trustee Larry Wadzeck has not yet filed to run again. There are also three board positions up for election in the Liberty County Hospital District Board of Directors. Incumbents Bruce Stratton, Paul Henry and Ed Pickett have said they will file.
Roy Bennett: A well known former Liberty man - Roy Bennett, now of Brady, Texas is in a San Angelo hospital in critical condition. Roy Bennett age 83 was city manager of Liberty in the mid- 1970’s. His daughter Laura Bennett – a school teacher – also of Brady said Mr. Bennett suffered, what she described, as an episode on Wednesday including pneumonia, respiratory distress, and probably a heart attack. We are told he has not regained consciousness since the Wednesday event. Roy Bennett has continued to host a music program here on KSHN Radio each Saturday night for several decades. That program will be off the air until Roy is ready to resume it.
Benefit Moves: A benefit for four orphaned Anahuac children set for this Saturday has been moved indoors due to expected cold weather. The benefit tomorrow from 11 am. to 3 p.m. will be held at the Oak Island Community Building, 1126 West Bayshore Rd. For information call Kari Perry 409-267-1067.
Book Signing: There is a book signing this Sunday for Dr. Sheri L. Dark’s new book “Hidden with God”. It will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Berean Tabernacle Baptist Church in Liberty.
