Liberty Levee Project: At their meeting on January 8, Liberty City Council heard the first reading of a resolution authorizing the Liberty Community Development Corporation to spend $193,360 for repairs on the north side of the Main B Levee. We’ve reported the Main B Levee had experienced some minor slope failures during Hurricane Harvey from Bowie Street west approximately 400 feet. Liberty City Manager Tom Warner told council the project was presented to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA has authorized a 90% reimbursement to the city for the levee repairs once they are completed. Under the resolution, LCDC will provide interim funding in the amount of $193,362 and the 10% for FEMA reimbursement or $31,274
LISD Audit: Liberty Independent School District trustees were presented with the 2017-18 annual fiscal year audit Tuesday by CPA Shelby Lackey. The auditor provided the district with what is called an unmodified opinion. That means the district’s records are complete and include accurate disclosures that comply with standard accounting practices and procedures. During the 2017-18 fiscal year, LISD had gross revenues in the general fund of $21.09 million and expenses of $21.25 million. That budget required $157,629 be taken from the general fund balance to meet expenditures. At the end of the last fiscal year on August 31, 2018, the district’s general fund balance totaled $10.86 million. However, that includes $1.57 million that is restricted by contractual obligations related to school debt. That means the useable general fund balance is $9.28 million.
MLK Day Closings: Monday marks the annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The Liberty County Courthouse and county annexes plus all municipal offices in Liberty, Cleveland and Dayton will be closed Monday for the national holiday. Banks and post offices will also be closed. Students in six of the seven school districts in Liberty County are out of school Monday with only Devers ISD students attending classes. Please note, garbage service will run as usual Monday in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland.
Obituaries: William E. “Bill” Bailey II, 84, of Baytown. Service 2 p.m. Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.
