Skimmer Alert: A skimming device that thieves use to steal credit and debit card information has been found on a fuel pump at Miller’s Shell on Hwy. 90 in Liberty. Police say owners of Miller Shell were victims, just like their customers. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said the device was located after a customer’s complaint last Thursday. To avoid becoming a victim, Commissioner Miller said to stay away from pumps that are out of eyesight of clerks and look for signs the pump has been tampered with, including broken seals. He also suggests using a credit card and not a debit card so crooks can not access your bank account. The commissioner also points out that most of these devices use Bluetooth technology. So a simple check on your cell phone to see if a Bluetooth device is nearby is a good way to detect these devices. Keeping a close eye on financial statements is also a good idea for anyone using debit and credit cards at any gas station. If you suspect a pump has been tampered with, report it to the Texas Department of Agriculture at 1-800-Tell-TDA – that’s 1-800-835-5832.
